Eco Committee
In the school year 22/23, we established an Eco Committee at school to address issues of environmental impact and to raise awareness of the challenges we all face in the years ahead.
What is the Eco Committee?
The Eco Committee is a group of pupils who meet each half term to discuss eco friendly
and environmental issues within school which prepares children to live their future lives
with consideration for global issues.
The roles and responsibilities of the Eco Committee are to:
● attend regular meetings.
● discuss issues and think of solutions.
● express their own views and those of their peers.
● be active in contributing to help lead changes that have been decided on
environmental issues.
Why do we have an Eco Committee?
-To ensure our school is eco-friendly and prepares pupils to live with reflection of the
environment.
-To make sure each class has a platform to voice their opinions.
-To discuss and raise issues related to the environment.
Miss Rooney and the Eco Committee have made several changes to our school including:
- More plants on our school grounds to encourage more insects and wildlife. We even spread wildflower seeds in an attempt to join in with the 'Wildflower Verges' created by Rotherham council as a food source for many pollinating insects, birds and even some mammals.
- New signs around school to remind children and staff to turn off lights in rooms which are not in use.
- Introduced 'Eco Assemblies' where children in the Eco Committee ran assemblies to inform children around school about being more environmentally conscious.
We even held a 'LIGHTS OFF' day on Tuesday 20th June 2023. All lights across school were switched off and we managed to save enough energy to power the average UK household for one day (that includes having the tumble dryer on, cooking three meals and having the television on overnight!)
